The new Google TV Android remote. It’s a remote on your phone. Nothing more. Again a huge missed opportunity. Why can I not at least check the guide from my phone before I switch channels? Why is the information only one way from phone to TV? Why can I not look up information on my phone regarding the TV I am watching? Or at minimum: why can I not control my other devices with this remote?
Everything about Google TV is engineering based - no vision involved. Lets put the web on the TV. As is - not optimized or filtered. And for search? Let’s use a keyboard. Even though Microsoft and others have tried for years and failed because people don’t want a keyboard with their TV. And let’s use a phone as a remote - nothing more. Just as a remote. Even though we already have 20 remotes.
This engineering focus is most highlighted by the last sentence in the clip: “perhaps best part of all is that everyone in the room can use their own remote app at the same time”. Is that the best? Why would that not be happening? That is true for every TV remote I’ve ever used. Sure it might require engineering to make it happen in this Wifi App architecture, but which consumer cares about that?
Google TV is in dire need of some vision. How about acquiring Boxee, Google boys?
