Hi guys,

The woman in this picture, Sarah, is the wife of a friend of mine, Tim Geary. She was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) not long ago and the disease has progressed quickly. The onset began just after her insurance lapsed (natch) and her family is in need of finances to fund her care. 

We at Tumblr kick ass on the helping-others front, so would you consider sending a couple of bucks their way?

I know these people and saw the two of them together the other day. They are a couple just like any of us, but she was in a wheelchair and unable to speak. I know that if I was in this situation, I would be at the mercy of others’ generosity.

Shocking. ALS is a terrifying disease (which my Dutch family also has had to deal with). But the most shocking of this story to me is that in the richest nation on earth, people like her have to rely on incidental generosity in a case like this. I hope that she is helped, but I also hope that America quickly finds a structural solution that also helps others like her who don’t have such great friends.
